Day 23 Dunnet Bay to Stromness, Orkney 64mls

Alarm on for 7.30 so we can be at Gill Bay for a 9.30 sailing (1hour) to St Margaret's Hope, Orkney. It was an unexpectedly warm crossing, sun out and quite mild. As soon as we landed we headed for Kirwall for a mooch round. Quite a pleasant small town, with a large cathedral and quite a few touristy shops. We then drove round the coast road was amazed at the fact that most of the land is farmed. No open moorland or areas for walking. Visited Skara Brae, a neothithic site from 3000 BC, which was discovered when the winds blew the tops of the dunes in 1850.
Had a dissappointing crab sandwich in the visitor cafe then made our way to our campsite for the next 2 nights, Point of Ness, Stromness. No one on reception, just pitch where you want and the warden will be round in the morning to take the money! Its right on the edge of the sea with a nice coastal walk past the golf club where we have been watching the seals lazing on the shore.
Venison steak for dinner - local speciality!!
